I am writing to you in response to your call for applications concerning the 3rd ISCAR Summer University in Moscow State University of Psychology and Education “Moving with and beyond Vygotsky”, which will take place in Moscow on Monday 2nd – Sunday 8th of July 2012.
My name is Eleni Kolokouri, I am a pre-primary school teacher and a PhD student in the University of Ioannina in Greece. The title of my PhD Thesis is “Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) in formal and informal teaching of Natural Sciences in the early grades (5-9 years old)” and it is connected with applying CHAT in formal and informal science education and on rethinking of scientific literacy as well as the role of Information and Communication Technologies.
I came across with socio-cultural and historical psychology during my studies as well as during my 5year work as a lab assistant in the Department of Early Childhood Education in the University of Ioannina. At this position I developed a strong foundation in understanding the socio-cultural and historical aspects of Science Education. Meanwhile I participated in common projects with my supervisor as well as with other PhD students towards this direction.
I recently became a member of the ISCAR Special Section in Science Education which was formed during the ISCAR Congress 2011 in Rome. I strongly believe that my participation in the summer university will provide me with the proper skills and competences to work and cooperate efficiently with other members of this section. Furthermore, I will have the opportunity to cooperate with other PhD students of the socio cultural theories, as well as with professors who are experts in the field of socio cultural theories.
At this point I would also like to mention that I will receive a lot of support for my PhD Thesis in this Summer University, as I will learn more about the connection between theory and various methodologies. The fruitful exchange of ideas with other PhD students and professors will make my thesis a product of social interaction.
