A qualitative study of the motivation for learning German in the city of Salvador – Bahia under the perspective of sociocultural theory

I am 46 years old man and come from Brazil. I have learned English since 2003 and Germ since 1993. In 2009 I got my master degree. The purpose of my research was to investigate the results of the application of activities prepared with the animated cartoon, the Simpsons, privileging the use of mass media in the classroom and aiming to improve the knowledge of the learners in the target language. The theoretical principle for this study is the sociointeracionist theory suggested by Vygotsky connected to Paulo Freire’s philosophical purpose. It defended the mediation of the learning process through resources related to students’ interests, and also the interaction that occurs in and outside the classroom when the subjects related to students’ reality or to their everyday life is approached. The chosen methodology of a qualitative nature consisted of a case study in which research instruments such as questionnaires, class diaries and interviews were used.
At this moment I am working to write a project of doctorate about the motivation for learning German in Salvador, the city where I live and I would like to use the principle of the Cultural-Historical theory. As I have had always interested in working with the activity theory I suppose that it is a good possibility to learn about this theory.
My expectations from the Summer School are mentioned below:
- I hope to learn more about the activity theory;
- I expect improve more my project ;
- I hope to make it practicable to the Salvador’s reality;
- I hope to meet people from all over the world and so to change experience in term of culture and knowledge.
